Friday Gems! It's a thing and it's totally happening. I don't know about you, but I had the hardest time getting into the swing of things this week. I missed a few workouts earlier on and had a difficult time sleeping. I kind of failed at sticking to my routine, and as such, today's gems are mostly about tips and tricks to maintain some semblance of calm throughout the week. I want to be someone who intentionally slows things down, and while I'm not committing to daily meditation, or saying that I will always be a morning person, I've decided to try and integrate a few little tricks into my day to get me back on track. Also I'm in full blown shopping-for-fall mode, and the "fall fashion" link made me LOL. Enjoy!
1. Headaches - I've been using peppermint oil to help with headaches for some time now, but I'm really intrigued by this recipe! Every week I try to experiment with my essential oils in some way or another. This mixture was just added to the list!
2. Mindfulness - have you tried this? I hear this word so often at work but I have yet to try it out for myself. I like Geneva's beginner's guide, and plan to give the practices a go in the evenings when sleep just wont find me.
3. If you live in the area, you have probably heard of the astronomical damage the Valley Fire in Lake, Napa and Sonoma counties have caused. As of this morning, 585 homes have been destroyed, and 73,000 acres are burnt. Also Harbin Hot Springs is completely gone (this is the former nudest colony + spa that most people assume my hippy parents named me after - not actually the case). As someone who has experienced my fair share of wildfire-related evacuations, I know the fear that accompanies fire season in California. Thankfully, I have never lost a home or my family's possessions in one of these events, and I can't even begin to imagine what that feels like. If you are so inclined, here is a list of places you can donate to support the families affected by this fire, and the firefighters themselves. This site also outlines ways to donate, volunteer opportunities, and special events that will be held around the Bay with proceeds going to families in need.
4. Fall Fashion - Now that we've talked about fire and destruction, want a good laugh? Here, check this out. My friend and I were lamenting about the cropped ankle flare trend recently, and then she sent me this. While my opinions on fall's trends aren't quite as strong as the author's, I did find this pretty funny. I mean, I definitely own a suede skirt and opted for a new pair of flares this month, but I don't know, I just can't really get behind patchwork. And culottes? Jury is still out.
Question: Definitely want to hear your thoughts about fall trends. Do you love you some culottes? Think they're grotsky little byotches? Let me hear it!
