I'm so excited to share a fun collaboration with you today. I met Catherine of basiccontent recently and was immediately drawn to her company's aesthetic and mantra. Catherine is a firm proponent of taking life by the horns, be it in her beautiful San Francisco-based brand, or her blog for aspiring female entrepreneurs. I had been looking for a fun and flirty dress to add to my "special occasion" capsule for some time now, and after meeting with Catherine, I knew that hers was a company I wanted to support. Though this blog is small, I want you readers to know that I would never feature a brand I didn't whole-heartedly love. All of basiccontent's dresses are made and produced in the US. They even source their silks from a US producer - no small feat considering the US silk production market is nearly nonexistent. I'd also like to tell you that for this feature basiccontent generously gifted me a dress of my choosing - and folks, the flutter skirt dress is good. It's real good.
Before trying out the flutter dress for myself, I sat down with Catherine and chatted about how basiccontent came to be. The company's origin story mirrors my own capsule process in many ways. During an interim moment in her career, Catherine decided to channel her energy into small daily goals, some of which revolved around her wardrobe. After finding success with a few personally-made dresses, she took a hard look at the items hanging in her closet, made the shift to conscious consumerism, and discovered a dearth of ethically-made, well-priced, versatile dresses in the market. And thus, basiccontent was born. I encourage you all to read the delightful origin story in Catherine's own words when you have a minute.
Basiccontent embodies many of the values I prioritize when considering a piece for my capsule: they adore minimal design, quality fabric, and are proudly transparent when it comes to their production. Catherine had this to say when asked about her company's commitment to positive impact:
Not sure what more you could ask for than that, folks.
For this collaboration, I styled the flutter skirt dress a few different ways. Though this dress has firmly solidified a spot in my special occasion capsule (and has already made an appearance at a recent wedding), I can see myself wearing it to a variety of outings in the future. The picture collage up top showcases my idea for taking the dress to brunch, and below you'll find some thoughts around how to wear it to an evening event or a date night.
If you're into the silhouette as much as I am, good news: the lovelies at basiccontent have generously offered 20% off to all readers on any of their dresses between now and 10/25 using the code CAPSULELOVE!
I have loved the process of profiling this local, ethically-made company, and I hope to bring you more features like this in the future. There's something truly wonderful about supporting local business in this way, especially when said companies have female founders and CEOs. I encourage you to all to check out basiccontent and show them some love!
