Week one of 2017's Winter 10 x 10 is over and done with, and what a week it has been! I have so enjoyed connecting with the hundreds of you who are also participating in this challenge, and seeing how everyone has styled their 10 pieces with such creativity is inspiring, to say the least. Now that we are halfway through the 10 x 10, I can report back that just as suspected, this challenge has forced me to get resourceful with what I already own, and has also reinforced some hunches I've had for a while about my own style preferences.
You guys, I think I have a uniform. More on that later.
The single biggest hurdle I faced this week was weather related, and it seems I'm not alone in that particular struggle. I went into the week knowing that San Francisco was going to get a bit of rain, but not thinking too much of it. Typically when we get "weather" in the city it's more refreshing than anything. Perhaps we'll get a day of rain, or some spotty showers in the morning, but the precipitation is generally mild and short-lived. This week, however, things were different.
The rain poured, and then poured some more. I received a flash flood push notification on my commute home. Trees were uprooted and toppled onto cars. Resorts in Tahoe got nine feet of snow! Now, I know in the grand scheme of things our recent storm is still pretty temperate, and I hate to be that weak Californian complaining about a little rain, but it did throw a bit of a wrench in my outfit planning. I had originally intended to incorporate my most favorite velvet kitten heeled mules into my 10 picks, but after three consecutive days of showers, I called an audible and swapped 'em out for Everlane's leather street shoe. It was a good choice. I'll save the kitten heels for my next challenge.
In any case I had a lot of fun mixing and matching my 10 pieces to create five different looks. Though they follow the same basic formula, aka, my uniform, they each carry their own distinct vibe and flavor. Here's how my first five looks came together:
I was a little uncertain about throwing three coats into the mix, and only having three shirt/top options, but I'm really glad I did. The outer layer has been so crucial recently, and I often find myself keeping even my warmest coat on in the office all day long. Also hats. Man, I'm really a hat person - specifically a Janessa Leone hat person (have you seen their Choose Quality campaign? Such good stuff). Some of these looks felt a little plain until a hat was added and then, bam, an outfit was born.
All in all I'm feeling pretty confident going into week two of this 10 x 10 challenge, and I am so excited to see what you all have up your sleeves. Thanks for following along on Instagram, and for taking the time to see how things are going in my neck of the woods!
